Dance meets art and bodies meet stones in this community dance project by Alejandra Benet. 'Brick by Brick' performs on tour in Malmö Art Museum's exhibition 'Borderland'.

Together with a group of five women, dance artist Alejandra Benet premieres a new community dance performance in Malmö Art Museum's exhibition 'Borderland'. The performance 'Brick by Brick' presents the interaction of five performers centered around a literal and figurative cornerstone of our society, the brick.

Through an interplay of movement and metaphor, the performance delves into the collective tapestry of human co-existence, exploring the theme of collectivism. The term “collectivism” stresses the capacity of human beings for collective action, stressing their willingness and ability to pursue goals by working together rather than striving for personal self-interest.  Themes like individualism, conflict, collaboration, fragmentation, and construction emerge naturally in the performance, conveying an array of symbolic readings to the audience.

Over the course of two months, this group of women of different ages met eighteen times to develop this performance. It was of great importance for Alejandra to create this piece collaboratively, letting everyone's voices be heard and tapping into the innate potential within each of them. The project originated from the question how to manipulate and interact with bricks through movement.

Special thanks to Juan Carlos Mendoza, Khira Fromark, Maja Svartåker and anyone who generously assisted to produce this performance and to artist Claudia Bosse. Collaborating as a performer for her had an invaluable influence on this performance.
